The Thekkady Lake hemmed in by the benevolent Sahya Mountain Ranges.
This manmade lake is situated at an altitude of 2890 feet from the sea level. The confluence of Mullayar and Periyar which originate from the so called Shiv Giri Hills , occurs here at the beginning of the Thekkady Lake. The Masonry Gravity Dam, Mullaperiyar, which is the oldest in India and the one and only of its type in the world, to be constructed with ‘Surkhi Mortar’ is situated here.
The Periyar Wild Life Sanctuary is located around the Dam’s reservoir and it is spread in a stretch of 925square kilometers. This is the prime reason why Thekkady has marked an important place of its own in the map of top tourist attractions in the world. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is veritably enchanting where the dense Evergreen Forest is spread across 360 square kilometers. This tourist destination has a special ecological pattern.
The peculiarity of this wildlife sanctuary which also conceives the catchment area of the Mullaperiyar Dam is that, it is the gathering ground of seven types of forests.
The vegetation, flora and fauna and birds of this area are uniquely rich. A varied flora of around 1970 genera including the spices, herbs and shrubs are seen in the verdant patches of the hillocks. Its fauna includes 62 varieties of Mammals, 320 kinds of Birds, 45 genera of Reptiles, 27 types of Amphibians, 160 varieties of Butterflies… Yes.., another beautiful reflection of the ecosystem which enriches and diversifies the beauty and abundance of the dense woodlands.!
Thousands of visitors are coming here to perceive the greenish smooches…that the rain pours on the hills…, the moon beams bestow on the rivers…and the wind stretches to the woods. The climate is comparatively cool here. The temperature usually not rises above 30degree Celsius even during the extreme summer days. In the months of December and January, the temperature falls below 15degree Celsius.
